Well, remember the bit in the book about training and research. Research doesn't need to be hunting through a library or studying in a formal setting. Research (without an instructor) can really just be practice. Note also that the skill gain for this sort of research is 1D6-2, which means you can LOSE skill by practicing the wrong way...
