Something just occurred to me about our discussion concerning slashes and thrusts, which might make a difference in your analysis. You said you'd been studying longsword, but you didn't say whether or not you've done any training with a shield.
I took a little bit of epee many years ago, and thinking back to that, what you say about the advantages of thrusts over slashes rings true, but when I think of the few times I've played boffer games with shield and sword, everything changes. It's MUCH harder to thrust effectively against someone with a shield, and likewise when you're using a shield, slashes are rather more viable, since you've got your shield foot forward and your sword foot behind.
