Hmmm. I had forgotten about the bounce of the blade. And I concede that I was thinking of a deflection as being very distinct from a block, whereas they're really just points on a continuum, depending on the angle of your parrying blade. Nonetheless, in contrast, there really isn't anything corresponding to a block in parrying a thrust, except with a shield.
I think we're in agreement that the RQ rules are basically pretty good. I was mostly annoyed that swords in my game were NEVER used for slashing; it seemed aesthetically unsatisfying.
My view has come around a bit, following our discussion. I accept that in tactical terms, a thrust is much quicker. I'm coming to see parrying a slash as aiming for a complete deflection (critical or special success) but settling for a block.
