Yeah, I know the story of the Gladius, pilum etc, that is why I specified the pilum as a missile weapon as well in my additional weapons section. Like the punk concert analogy, pretty fitting. The Macedonian phalanx was unbeatable until the Romans beat it, but you are right, the front ranks had people behind pushing them against te romans, rendering their long spears useless.
I can't seem to remember the rule about the guy with the shortest weapon closing with his opponent. Which version of RQ are you using? If its 3rd edition, please point me towards the correct page/section so that i can brush up my knowledge. Dman, an I just posted a whole serious talk about an optional rule to cover this on the RuneQuest rules list (see links).
