I like your ideas and must make a plan to visit the links youinserted. In terms of setting, I think the time is really nice. Am not sure if teh Danes and Norsemen would have converted to cristianity by then? If not, or even if so, one could seriously benefit from the RuneQuest Vikings box, if you in the UK you could prob pick one up cheap second hand locally, or try eBay (I got most of my supplements that way). Also for themes, give Tiger of the Sea by Robert E Howard a read. (He who created Conan, Kull etc). Its shoort stories have given my brother and I great ideas for adventures and settings, more so in your case if you are going for an earth setting.
In terms of magic, well my campaigns are typically very low magic. As a GM I really am not bothered with sidelining the rest f the group while the shaman pishes around on the sopirit plane etc, Divine thats cool, bit as we use a home brew world, a rule of thumb is if you want it, justify it, write up the cult and submit to the site. (Must say no one bar me has done so yet, ha ha)
Glorantha - what can I sa. I have all the RQIII suppliments but don't use it, other tha for the odd ref, idea and mostly just as a good read.
A lot of people diss the Eldorad setting, but in an earth campaign, it may prove of use. Maybe try a get lost at sea/long seat trip to Hi Brasil (Spelling?) H Warnert Munn's The King at the World Edge" book, although in my voew a tedioous read, could prove a rocking setting for lads lurking about circa 900AD.
Cheers
Tony
