Hello, i've just stumbeled over this site, and so far it looks great! I've been playing RQ since 1990, and want to praise the combatrules. I fear this mail to gain some length, but I ask you to bare with me; since I live in Norway, the RQ environment isn't very big.
On occations, some aspect of the combat rules have irritated me, and while figuring out how to improve them, i've looked up the rules in the rulebook just to find that the silly rule turns out to be me misinterpeting it...(I'm Norwegian, can't help it)
Now I've been attending Western Martial arts training for 18 months, focusing on the medieval longsword. I've been comparing my so far limited blade-experiences with the RQ.rules. The more I learn on the trainin ground, the sounder the rules seems.
-There is of course room for improvement, but then often on the expence of flow, speed, and so on. The initiative and strike rank rules ,for instance, are great. The damage system and the damage system (both total hit points and hit locations) is allso very simple and good. I've read some of the comments on the topic: "some weapons are more effective on some types of armor", and i see the point. (A punch dagger, for instance, wouldn't do as much damage as a conventional blade d4+2, but goes through anything save metal discs\plate.) I have no good and in the same time SIMPLE solutions to the problem, though. The two areas where I've introduced some new rules are Fategue and hit armor coverage:
To take the last, it's basically boosting the hit location roll from 1d20 to 1d100, and boosting the encumbrance base from 10 to 100 (So a metal breast plate covering the original "torso" location, takes 20% instead of 2\10) What i get from this is that I split the body into 27 hit locations, the arm for instance consists of hand, underarm, elbow and shoulder, BUT I RETAIN THE OLD HP LOCATIONS. So a hit to the elbow, for instance, apply on the good old "arm" location.
The point of it all is that the armor you wear cover in more detail, So if you have a brynje covering from thigs to neck and the shoulders, it the AP values apply there as well! (You have to pay enc. for the thighs and shoulders, though.) A "Conan" vambrace on the underarm would only protect on the underarm.
