Whew, thats a big one. Where to start? Have you ever played a Role Playing game before? My best suggestion is for you to lay your hands on the rules. There are three editions of RQ out, and many hard core players have heated debates about which one to play but for a beginner I would reckon you should try and get the Rune Quest Deluxe edition published by Avaon Hill. It tis the most recent edition and probarbly the easiest to pick up. It came in a box and more recently, as a perfect bound book. (The book has errata list at the back so may be a better way to go, although the box had a nicish map of ancient europe, extra character sheets and some dice inside). If you are in the UK/Europe, it may be easier to lay hands on the Games Wrkshop licenced versions of RQ Deluxe. They are ghard bound books - Rune Quest and Advanced Rune Quest. Slightly different formaty but essentially the same game.
If you are hesitant to lay out for teh duluxe set, maybe get the Avalon hill basic RQ box, which is a cut down version of the rules but still playable.
Lastly, a good way to achive an overview of how RQ woeks is to visit Peter Marancis site http://www.maranci.net/whatrq.htm
and select the core rules for basic RQ link. He has compiled a nice article about RQ .
Hope this helps
