I noticed Gaia is a globe and was curious as to why? It would fit better with Mythologies if it weren't a planet in a solar system.
Tony - Hmm, good question. I am not sure myself why we chose a globe, it was probarbly just an assumption. I have campaigned with my group to make Gæa about 1&1/2 times teh size of earth. Another assumption we had was that there are celestial bodies etc, so it goes that Gæa has to be in some sort of solor system.
Linking Gæa to other worlds through portals could be done via different methods. Maybe many worlds exist at the same place on different plains or maybe they are just very far and are linked through wormhole type phenomiina.
As for technology, thats also a tough one. I am not personally against clever invention etc but in a world where magic is real, I reckon there could be a few reasons why technological progress is stagnant or at least very slow. At the end of the day having someone marching around with a gun or laying rails for a steam engine will spoil the fantasy setting. Some reasons may be though:
A. As magic is very real, people with genuine potential to invent etc will usually move toward becoming practitioners in magic.
B. The magic counsils etc may deliberatly suppress invention and lateral thought as they may perceive it as a threat. Kinda liek the school of thought that petrolium companies buy up all designs for efficient non fossil fuel driven vehicles.
C. The gods themselves may keep the people "ignorant" as an enlightened folk would want to challenge their religious beliefs.
The list could get lengthy.....
