Sounds impressive! I've trained longsword for allmost 2 years with an experienced englishman that have moved to Norway, and who have been doing viking \ medieval martial arts\reenactment for 20 years. We've done some cuttingtraining as well as trying to get the grasps on Fiore Del Liberi(\e)'s fightingmanual from 1380+\-

I think the Jap swords were sharper because it was a point in having them sharp. Metall was more scarce in that area than in europe, and that's why their armor were less about metal than in europe. Bamboo is easier to cut than a chainmail coat... That's allso why they're curved; to enhance the cutting. The advantage with a strait sword is that you get more alternatives\options.
I think it 's dangerous to think that the attitude to the art of martial arts was much different between Japan and europe in medieval times. I think the two cultures was very similar up to the time of the gunpowder. Then the two cultures drifted apart; the knights of europe lost their warriorstatus and became fine nobility wearing wigs and at most a rapier letting the gun and the proffessional soldier rule the field, whereas the japanese knights (samurais\shoguns) managed to ban the gun for over 300 years, preserving the old norms and values up to our days. It's fassinating how the japs adopted to the industrial revolution without letting go of their traditions
In the society I dwell in the attitude is that the european metallurgy of the medieval period was far supperior to the middle east (Muslim archers complaining that their arrows couldn't penentrate Crusader's chainmail f.exs.)
Wether the swords were sharp or not is somthing people discuss; not because of the ability to make them sharp, but the need, as metal armor canselled out the advantage to a sharp edge.
