Bjorn - In response to some of your questions - I am trained in Broadsword, epee, rapier, rapier and dagger, sabre - and very limited katana. Also quarter-staff. I am a certified stage combatant from the Society of Fight Directors and Combatants.
You sword is made of a stronger material I imagine then swords in actual use. The softer material couldn't hold an edge as well. This is not to say that it doesn't have an edge, but only the katana would have had a razor's edge due to the metallurgy the Japanese were so far advanced in. The weapons would cut, but in a lot of ways it was more like cleaving with an axe.
Also - things to note the Katana is stonger, lighter, thinner and the 45 degree angle of the blade enhanced its cutting. The middle east blades - scimitars may have had the curve for cutting as well, but a lot of it was similar to the sabre in that the curved blade allowed a man fighting from horseback to pull his blade out of a body as he rode past.
