I agree with you about the knock back for cutting weapons being unrealistic - though it should be kept in mind that the broadsword and older swords weren't a sharp of a cutting edge and sometimes resembled more of a club at times.

I think of the Rob Roy as a critical success with a really strong man (damage bonus) hitting a smaller weaker (less hp) man.
That scene however is probably one of the best sword fighting scenes. I remember the movie coming out when I was in the middle of my own sword training and my teacher was very enthusiastic because it mirrors what happened in Europe during the advent of the rapier.
The broadsword and shield were the mainstay of the schools, but the rapier, buckler was on the rise. In sword practice the rapier is the superior weapon. However, what happen is the master of the Broadsword school challenged the rapier sword master in order to prove dominance and get some of his lost students back. Tragically for the rapier school - the master was hacked down, ala Rob Roy, and the rapier went out of fad for a significant period (70 years I believe) before making a return and ending the use of the broadsword.
