Before the erratum tripling impaling damage with a rapier, I had been trying to figure out a way to make the rapier more useful, and one idea I came up with was to make it an honorary two-handed weapon, allowing it to parry and attack in the same melee round.

Au contraire. Its lethality lies precisely in its ability to pierce deeply into vital organs. The extra damage from wiggling the weapon around while it's still impaled is just a bonus for sadists.

They are called "barbs". But the point of the extra damage from in situ impaling weapons is not really to do extra damage, but to reflect the gravity of the situation when one has an arrow or spear or broadsword sticking through your gut. I have never known a character to actually take the extra damage (except if someone else is still hanging onto the other end of the weapon and deliberately twists it) because what usually happens is the wounded character sinks to his knees, gasping in agony, and is out of the fight. The rule creates additional drama in the situation, where his comrade comes over to apply first aid, looks at the wound and gravely announces "The arrow has gone deep. I do not know if it can be removed."
So I'm squarely in the pro-impaling rules camp. I think they're very good, and add a lot to the feel of the game. My only concern had been that there was no corresponding feature to make slashing or bashing as interesting. Although, in fact, for bashing at least there is the fact that soft armour is half-effectiveness against it.
