If you use the Glorantha setting, I find it hard to avoid them (unless you take their history, fate and attitude and paste it on a tribe you create. In a world of mostali, UZ and Aldrya, you need somthing really wierd to make people rais their eyebrows. I think the ducks play the role of the scapegoats, the "others" (they're one of the sartari tribes, but are treated rather bad by their fellow tribes) I think they give the GM the oppertunity to play on racist motives in his campagins. and if you really, really hate them, you can allways use the earth settings, or the GÆA ; )
I'm actually writing a setting \ adventure for Glorantha on this site that features a hidden\forgotten backwater fjord between god forgot and corflu where ducks from holy country \ sartar finally have found a safe haven. It's meant to be a beginning character setting (even beginningcharacters become powerful compared to ducks, so it's easy to gain herostatus amongst them, if you manage to earn their trust.) with possebilities to crusade north to the block when the characters improve.
