I don't think that is solving the problem, but avoiding it. I find the impaling rules very plausible and realistic. I don't think you should get rid of them.
I am trying hard not to open my rule booklet - I am currenty in school and just happened to find this website - but if I start pulling out rules my studies will suffer - but in my games impaling weapons I would only give half of the damage modifier - I can't remember if that is the rule or a Pete-ism. This may help bring some equilibrium to it.
