Well, you don't use a sword in only one way. You might use the longsword as a club, and it could be damn effective, especially when facing people with full plate armour. (Why is the crossguard so pointed?) I know authentical longswordtecniqes that uses the sword as a throwing spear, a club\warhammer , a quarterstaff, a dagger, a nd as a sword.
That's allso why I think that a quarterstaffdude with a quarterstaffskill of 89 and a MA skill (my version) on 30 should get successes on the longsword if rolling 30 or less. Actually, some master from medieval europe have stated that the sword is just a tool to enable the user to close with the opponent. (Wether he ment it litterary or not, I don't know.)

Cool point -the stuff on blocking. My experience is only on longsword, and with longsword you try to deflect all the time, because your deflections are allso the attacks. (For instance countering an overhead blow with a small sidestep and a horizontal deflection\cut to the side of the opponents head...)
When I keep critisizing your MA oppinions, it's because after doing longswordtraining (sublevel of the general term "Western martial arts" that covers any kind of fighting conducted in europe with or without weapons.) -for one and a half year I find it integrating grappeling, punching stabs, deflections, blocks and cuts into one consept of martial arts.
So you mean that the MA skill should not apply to Ninjas, fighting munks, etc. using quarterstaffs, singlestics, katanas, ninjatos, tantos, sais, etc. either?
