How Gæa and Other Worlds Fit Together

Top level Gæa GÆA

The concept of travelling between worlds is not new. While Gæa is a vast and complex world full of adventure, it is not the only world out there.

How Gæa Fits In

While Gæa will make an excellent stand alone world, I have always been fond of the concept of allowing a bit of leeway should someone want to import a character, concept or creature form another world.

Taking this one step further, I made a unilateral decision that certain races encountered on Gæa were alien, insofar they came from another world (and did not come to Gæa in spaceships!) I mentioned this concept in a small way in the Creation Myth.

An example: Humans come from Earth. During the godwar an Elder God in need of a bloodthirsty army opened a portal to earth and brought thousands of humans through. In terms of the godwar, this was a quick solution, but in mortal terms, the portal was open for a hundred years and humans from many ancient European and Mediterranean nations were moved to Gæa. Thus 90% of humans on Gæa are of Mediterranean and Alpine stock. In the century that the portal was open, other migrations also occurred. Animals from earth wandered through, sometimes unwittingly carrying other animals or plant seed. Some humans wandered through on their own and many of the humans moved by the god took grain, livestock and culture with.

Now the above is an extreme case, but the godwar did weaken the fabric between Gæa and other worlds, so that at certain times, inter realm travel is still possible. This is how the Northmen came to Gæa. Of Viking & Teutonic stock, a long ships accidental travel to Gæa resulted in them returning with news of a wonderful land. they did not know they had travelled to a different world, to them it was just a new land to settle. After many failed attempts and derision from doubters, a small fleet of settlers finally travelled made it through and a settlement established.

In a similar way many other gods, races, animals and plants have arrived in Gæa, some in large numbers, others in ones and two's. This is not to say that Gæa was barren, people such as the Giss (Lizard Men) and the mysterious Sstethi (Snake People) are endemic to Gæa.

A very basic concept diagram of how the worlds inter-join is shown below. Being very basic, it only mentions a few realms, more such a Glorantha could be added at the GM's discretion. Maybe to reach Gæa from Glorantha, one may have to heroquest through Hades or such.
